The What, What and How

Who We Are:

The PPPC is a non-profit organization that represents all pork producers who produce hogs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and comply with the mandatory pork checkoff, pursuant to the Pork Act (Pork Promotion, Research, and Consumer Information Act of 1985.)

What We Do:

The Pennsylvania Pork Producers Council represents and advocates on behalf of the state’s hog farmers and encourages consumers to “Think Pork”.  Through the utilization of funding received by the national Pork Checkoff, the PPPC provides consumers with information about the nutritional value, versatility and preparation of Pork.  Additionally, the Council provides education and resources to assist producers in providing a safe and wholesome pork product while upholding their commitment to animal well-being, the environment and their communities.

How Do We Do It?

The PPPC administers programs for the purpose of promotion, consumer and producer education and research from funding provided by the National Pork Board and the Pork Checkoff.

Funding allocations and decisions are made the PPPC Board of Directors, a group of 27 producers and allied industry representatives.  The Board meets 10 times per year to address funding requests and establish direction and purpose of promotion and education activities.  The daily management of the Board and Council is handled by an Executive Director, who serves as the primary contact for organization.

How do I become a Member?

There is no formal membership or dues required to be a part of the PPPC.  If you are directly involved in the production of porcine animals and remit checkoff funds to the NPB or are representative of another individual, partnership, corporation or firm who does remit check-off funds to the NPB, then you are automatically a member of the Pennsylvania Pork Producers Council.  Additionally, any individual, partnership, corporation or firm who works in a supporting role of the pork industry is considered an associate member of the Council.

How do I become active in the PPPC?

If you are interested in participating in activities of the PPPC, please contact Amy Bradford at 717-651-5920 or abradford@pennag.com.

Pennsylvania Pork Producers Lowell and Janet Sensenig Awarded National Environmental Stewardship Award

For almost 15 years, the Pork Checkoff, along with its cosponsor, National Hog Farmer magazine, has awarded the industry's highest environmental honor – the Pork Industry Environmental Steward Award. The award honors producers who demonstrate a firm commitment to safeguarding the environment and their local communities.

Pennsylvania was excited to have one of their own receive this great recognition.  Lowell and Janet Sensenig of Mohnton were nominated for the national award after winning the Pennsylvania Environmental Stewardship Award in 2009.

In addition to the Sensenig’s, JAC Pork of Hartley, Iowa; Schafer Farms of Goodhue, Minn. and Bryant Worley Farms of Princeton, N.C. also received the national recognition.  The Environmental Steward award winners are judged on their commitment to maintaining a positive partnership between pork production and the environment. Their operations were evaluated on their manure management systems; water and soil conservation practices; odor-control strategies; farm aesthetics and neighbor relations; wildlife habitat promotion; innovative ideas used to protect the environment and an essay on the meaning of environmental stewardship.
